Human-in-the-Loop

A design where AI does the work but a human reviews, approves or decides at defined points before consequences become real.

Human-in-the-loop means the AI operates inside a workflow that includes deliberate human checkpoints: approving a draft before it sends, signing off a recommendation before it executes, or reviewing flagged exceptions. The AI handles volume; the human owns judgment and accountability at the moments that matter.

Executives should care because human-in-the-loop is the answer to the false choice between full automation and no automation. Well-placed loops cost little — a batched fifteen-minute daily approval keeps an agent productive around the clock — while keeping legal, reputational and ethical accountability where regulators and customers expect it: with a person. It is also how trust is earned: autonomy widens as reviewed output proves reliable.

Concrete example: an agent drafts all routine client correspondence overnight. Every morning the account manager reviews the queue in twenty minutes, edits two drafts, approves the rest — and personally handles the three the agent flagged as sensitive.

The design skill is placement: too few loops and you are unprotected; too many and you have built an expensive typewriter. Gate the irreversible, batch the rest.

What problem does Human-in-the-Loop solve, and how would you explain it to a colleague in one sentence?

AI can make mistakes. Check important facts, decisions and sources before relying on them.
